Kara's Classroom

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."-Dr. Seuss

I began teaching in 2010, after attending the University of Northern Iowa.  I taught 9-12 English and Language Arts in a rural district in Iowa for my first 3 years.  I also coached Speech and Theatre.  My drive to be in a more metropolitan area brought me to St. Paul, where I found CVA to be a fantastic fit for my career.  This is my third year at CVA, where I will be teaching 8-12 Language Arts and coaching competitive Speech.
At CVA, we are based on flexibility, academic rigor, integrity, self reliance, compassion, and individuality.  These values are reflected in our 8-12 Language Arts program.  I teach 8th grade language arts and high school language arts, including speech, creative writing, American literature, British literature, world literature, and women in literature.  Each class has a clear focus with clear objectives and goals in writing, reading, listening, and speaking.  All courses are based on skills listed in the Common Core Curriculum.
I have high expectations for my students, but also understand each of them as individuals.  I try to push them to overcome limitations and find the enjoyment of self-advocating. My classroom is centered around multiple perspectives.  I love literature and writing because of their possibilities.  Someone else might perceive a piece of literature much different than I might see it.  One person might write on a topic in a much different style than I would write about it.  I love to teach my students that sometimes there isn't a right or wrong answer.  Sometimes there are just perspectives.  I welcome my students' perspectives with open arms. I teach them to take their own perspectives and justify them, while still respecting the perspectives of others. My English and Language Arts classes provide ample and rigorous learning opportunities for these skills.  I am happy to find the same flexibility in my subject area that I find in our practices at CVA.  Many of my classroom decisions are made in collaboration with my professional peers and my students.  This is a testament to the nurturing atmosphere at CVA, where I happily keep my classroom.
