What is a charter school?

Charter schools are K-12 public schools that provide choice for parents and students within the public school system. A charter school is a small independent school district without geographic boundaries (located within the state). Charter schools are operated independently from the school district in which they are located, are staffed by teachers who have appropriate state licensure, and provide special education services. Charter schools have true site-based management. Charter schools are free of charge and open to all who apply.
  • Charter schools are very diverse in their focus. From project-based, arts-intensive, immersion language, on-line learning and technology-focused schools, the missions of charter schools vary widely.
  • Charter schools often have smaller enrollments than neighboring district schools, offering smaller class sizes and lower student to teacher ratios, and the opportunity for greater parent involvement.
